Morocco made history by being the quarterfinals for the first time and becoming the first Arab nation to reach that stage of the tournament when they defeated Spain in a historic win on Tues. Dec. 7, ESPN reports.
Massachusetts fans took to the streets shortly after the match ended. Mass State Police tweeted that the road was blocked at 3:00 p.m., asking drivers to find alternate routes.
Photos posted to Facebook showed a large group of people gathered by the beach, blocking traffic in the road.
Video footage showed fans wearing red, standing on top of cars, and waving Moroccan flags.
The road was cleared and reopened by 4:00 p.m. the same day, Massachusetts State Police tweeted.
Revere city officials estimate that the Moroccan community makes up at least 10% of its population.
Morocco's win was "more than football," BBC Sports reported. "This is one team's win and the pride of a whole region," BBC Sports reported Shaimaa Khalil wrote. "A cause for much needed collective joy in the Arab World."
